Field observations are an approach where we observe ‘real’ locations and settings, such as workplaces, homes, and historical establishments. It helps us visually understand the behavior, habits, needs, and social relations within the community.

Since I am indeed an adventurous person, I went to Harlem by myself. Personally, for the three years being here in New York, I have never been to Harlem, not even once. I lived in Queens, and I took my trip to Harlem’s 125th street around 4 pm on Sunday, the 25th of October. It took over an hour for me to get there. I ride the R train and transferred to the six trains of Lexington Avenue got off at 125th street. While exploring Harlem, this was the street of my main focus. I saw several small businesses as I walked up this avenue, such as delis, nail salons, and a braiding salon. However, there were various places for new fast food, including McDonald’s, Taco Bell, a pizza parlor, and malls. On the upper floors of the stores, there were also residential units. When I went there, it was a mesmerizing experience because I inevitably saw several buildings and infrastructures that are historically important to the community.
